References to antiquity and myth are common to the images that Paul Cava has created for more than five decades, but it is his unblinking observation of what is personal and, in particular what is intimate, that captures our imagination. Cava’s presentations of the human form take us in both directions through time, emphasizing the gesture significantly more than the pose. He combines the painterly with the mechanical, the borrowed with the newly conceived and what is written or scribbled-over with what is obscured or erased, offering us a place to see what can only be dreamed of, yet in a milieu of precise reality.

Cava uses paint, ink and crayon, collage and superimposed images, color and grayscale, devotional style devices incorporating multiple panels of diptych and triptych, all to encourage the viewer to embark upon a narrative of one’s own, Take some time with these, there is much to discover.
